I would love to see that explored more, however, because the short bit we did get was not enough to really believe the love story or even sympathise with his mother. We got to see the story of Cal’s parents. While the main villain and journey was complete, the reader never got to see even a shred of the after. Before these few extra scenes existed, it was like if Lord of the Rings had ended right after the ring was destroyed or if The Hunger Games had ended right after Katniss shot Coin. It leaves the reader at least feeling the world is changing and moving on. Both these sections address the problems of setting up the new order and how to deal to the Lakelands. Evangeline is also given a large chunk of the book, showing how she abicates her own crown and finds a place in the new world. A bittersweet finale but fitting for a character who has suffered so much and needs time to heal and rebuild. A few of the short stories in Broken Throne finally address these issues. Nothing save defeating Maven was addressed. However, Mare was left with no ending (be it sad or happy), the reader never finds out what happens to Evageline and her brother, and the Lakelanders are still a huge threat to the fragile new order in Norta. The major arc, the quest to defeat Maven, was completed. It felt more like a book ending than a series ending. War Storm ended without wrapping up anything. While I do think all of this could have been included in the final book instead of as an add on, I am happy I at least got some content to wrap it up.

However, I am very happy I read it, as it gave me the closure I needed for all my characters and gave me some more background on the world. I wasn’t sure I could handle anymore disappointment from what was such a fun story. So I debated even buying the companion set of short stories in Broken Throne. To love a series so much, only to have a bad ending, in the words of Jean Ralphio is: So when I say I was disappointed in the ending, I’m sure you can understand. When War Storm came out, I was at the bookstore at nine a.m I even took the day off work so I could just curl up and devour the entire book in one sitting.

I loved the post-apocalyptic setting, the strong heroine, and the magical aspects of the world. I patiently awaited each new sequel to find out what was next for Mare and Co. Let me start by saying, I was a huge fan of Red Queen.
